Best books of 2018

I know I am a bit late in posting this but I have decided to go through the many books I read in 2018 and pick my favourite ten books. It was difficult to pick just ten books because last year was such an amazing year for books and I did read some fantastic reads. The ten books I chose in the end are really a mix bag of genres, I have sci-fi books to murder mystery, contemporary to fantasy books, and I have loved reading every one of them.

This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada

After hearing so much hype for This Mortal Coil, I have to admit that I went into this with very high expectations. But even with them very high expectations I was completely blown away by this book. I finished the entire book in just one day, I couldn’t put it down. I am so happy that there is another book in the series released very soon.

The Extinction Trials by S.M. Wilson

This book is set in a dystopian world with dinosaurs, as soon as I found out about this book I bought it immediately, and I am so glad I did because its amazing. I loved everything about this book, from the story, to the characters, to the writing, everything about this book makes it a perfect read for everyone. I liked it so much that it has already made my list for my favourite reads of 2018.

Legendary by Stephanie Garber

There was a lot of hype surrounding this book before I started it, which I can understand because Caraval was amazing, but then it also made my expectations of the book increase the more and more I heard about the book. Thankfully the book is just as amazing as Caraval and does deserve all the hype and praise it has been getting. Normally the sequel to a first book is not as good, but Legendary definitely stands out as a sequel that works. I really enjoyed the plot, I thought the characters felt a bit more developed a fleshed out, and the writing as always was stunning.

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

I don’t think I can even put down into words what I think about this book because its absolutely mind blowing, in a good way. I knew I was in for a ride when it came to reading this but I was blown away with how amazing and thought this book really is. I love a good murder mystery read but this book flips the usual murder mystery genre on its head. It’s highly original and a hundred percent addictive.

What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera

I have been wanting to read this book ever since it was announced they were writing a book together and this book has been one of my most anticipated reads of last year. I had very high expectations before starting this book and I was a little worried that the book wouldn’t be able to meet up to my high hopes, but I was completely wrong and still fell in love with both the story and its characters. The characters are really relatable and the story felt so real and had the rawness of real life.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

I really enjoyed reading The Silent Patient, once I started I couldn’t put the book down. I found it to be addictive, gripping and very original. Even though I had some very high expectations for this book it surpassed all my expectations and more. The hype will be huge for this next year, and it deserves it all.

Skyward by Brandon Sanderson

When I was offered the chance to read this book a few weeks before the general release I jumped at the chance because it sounded amazing. I haven’t read many Brandon Sanderson books even though I really enjoyed reading The Final Empire. Skyward is a sci-fi book which I don’t usually read but I was utterly obsessed with this book until the very end. I loved everything about it, the writing, the story and the characters.

Jack of Hearts (and other parts) by L. C. Rosen

I saw a lot of buzz around this book all over the book community and was so happy when I got a chance to read this book a few months early. Jack of Hearts (and other parts) has been described as Love, Simon but with more sex, and I have to agree with this, but it also has a lot more to it. I really enjoyed how this story was written and how it doesn’t hold back on anything, its so raw and real.

Normal People by Sally Rooney

This book is not normally something I read but after it won quite a few awards recently I thought I would give this book a try and I am so glad I did because I absolutely loved it. After reading the first chapter I instantly fell in love with both of the characters and with the writing. It’s a slow build story but it’s so addictive.

Heartstopper Volume One by Alice Oseman

Graphic Novels are not something that I usually read but after seeing a kickstarter campaign for this book earlier this year I couldn’t resist buying a copy. I started this one evening and finished it a couple of hours later. It was loving,  heartwarming and so well written, I cant wait to read more in the future. I also loved reading a touching story in a different format, the drawings were wonderful.

  1. I have only read two on your list – Legendary and This Mortal Coil, but all the otehrs are on my to-be-read list! It’s hard to narrow it down to just a few books but I loved The Dollmaker of Krakow, The Toy Makers, Storm Keeper’s Island, Gilded Cage, Spellslinger and The Name of the Wind.
