Our Kind of Cruelty by Araminta Hall

Mike Hayes fought his way out of a brutal childhood and into a quiet, if lonely life, before he met Verity Metcalf. V taught him about love, and in return, Mike has dedicated his life to making her happy. He’s found the perfect home, the perfect job, he’s sculpted himself into the physical ideal V has always wanted. He knows they’ll be blissfully happy together.
It doesn’t matter that she hasn’t been returning his emails or phone calls.
It doesn’t matter that she says she’s marrying Angus.
It’s all just part of the secret game they used to play. If Mike watches V closely, he’ll see the signs. If he keeps track of her every move he’ll know just when to come to her rescue…

Our Kind of Cruelty is one of them books that once you start reading you find yourself thinking of reasons to cancel all other plans except to carry on reading. After just the first couple of chapters I was gripped and I am sure other readers who love a great thriller novel will feel exactly the same when they start reading Our Kind of Cruelty.

The story is told from Mike’s point of view, and I have to say that at times it does make an uncomfortable read. He becomes obsessed and infatuated with Verity and will only stop when he gets what he wants, and he wants her all tome himself. The more and more you read, the more darker the story gets and I found myself wondering how far is he going to go to get what he wants. Reading from his POV does only show you one side of the story, you never get to hear Verity’s side, but for me I think if he had gotten both sides of the story, then the book would lack a little momentum and not be as gripping.

As I said this book is very intriguing which makes you want to carry on reading until the very end. I did find it difficult to find a place to put the book down because at the end of every chapter it left me wanting to continue on with the story. This is a perfect summer read, find a comfy place to sit and get lost in this addictive story, you will not regret a minute. The story for me was something new and original and I really enjoyed reading it, even if some of the content wasn’t enjoyable to read about. It did creep me out in places, but for me a good thriller is all about the creepy and uncomfortable parts.

This is the first book I have read by Araminta Hall and I have to say that I really enjoyed her writing and how she structured the book. Her writing is so addictive and so well thought out that its so easy to get lost in her words. I found the book started really well and it did the job of catching your attention after the first couple of chapters. I did find  that towards the middle of the book started to drag a little, but only for a short while. Then towards the end the pacing picked up again and concluded with a satisfying end.

I would definitely recommend Our Kind of Cruelty to readers who love an original thriller book. After reading this book I did have some unanswered questions, but that s what I liked about this book, it doesn’t answer all the questions, it finishes with you having to think about the book. If you are looking for book to read in the summer sun then you should check out Our Kind of Cruelty.
