May Wrap Up

In May I had a pretty good reading month, I managed to read a total of six books. It still isn’t perfect and not to the standard I once was, but its a start. I’m not sure but I think sometimes the weather makes me less likely to pick up and read a book. Sometimes I find it too warm to sit down and read and in May we had some really hot days and instead of reading I found myself doing other things instead of reading. However the books that I did manage to pick up in May were some really great reads. I did love some more than the others but I found them all enjoyable.

The books I read in May were-

Autoboyography by Christina Lauren

After having this book sit on my shelf for a while now I thought it was the perfect time finally get round to reading it. I did have some very high hopes for this book because of reading some of the really positives reviews, I think this is one of the reasons why I didn’t really fall in love with it. I really couldn’t connect with the characters and I found myself skim reading towards the end. I did enjoy the writing though, and I thought the plot was something original. I think I might try and read this again later on in the year and see if my opinion changes.

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

I have been waiting to read this a while now, but I have also been a little put off from reading it because of the high expectations I had. I loved Simon Vs the Homo sapiens Agenda, and even though this is about Leah and not Simon, I didnt want to ruin my love for Simon. But I can safely say that I really enjoyed this book. I will go so far and say that I think the beginning half of Leah on the Offbeat is even better than Simon. It was great reading about the characters of Creekwood again, and I slipped back into story right from the very beginning.

Truth Sister by Phil Gilvin

Truth Sister was one of these books that I didn’t really know what to expect. I read the description for the book, but I didn’t read any reviews before hand, so I didn’t have any hype or worries. I went into this book with a clear and open mind, and I really enjoyed it. I loved the world, the characters and the writing. It did take me a while to read but I think that was because I was taking my time reading it to try and take it all in. But I really did enjoy going into a book without any preconceptions, I hope to try and be more like this with future books.

The Electrical Venus by Julie Mayhew

This was another book that I went into blindly, and I ended up really enjoying it. It was a change to read some historical fiction and I think its one of the reasons why I liked this book so much. The book is bought to life by some really interesting and exciting characters, and is written beautifully. If you are looking for a light historical fiction novel then I would definitely recommend The Electrical Venus.

Our Kind of Cruelty by Araminta Hall

Every month I am finding myself read a thriller book and I have been really enjoying mixing up my reading habits. I used to read a lot of thriller books but I stopped because they back too similar. I am happy to say though that I found Our Kind of Cruelty to be very original. I found the story to be really interesting and very different. I loved the writing, it made it very difficulty to actually put the book down. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the book. If you enjoy a really well thought out thriller then definitely pick this book up.

Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody

I was given the opportunity to review this title by the publisher and I jumped at the chance. The synopsis won me over the very first time I read it and I knew I had to read it. I am so glad I got the chance to read Ace of Shades because its amazing. I would recommend it to readers who want something different from a YA book. Ace of Shades is and edge of your seat, action adventure book that will leave you unable to put the book down and will trap you in its amazingly dark world. If you are looking for an addictive dark young adult read then you need to pick up this book.

Book of the Month

It was hard to pick just one book this month as my Book of the Month because I have read some really brilliant books, but there was just one book that edged out from the rest, and that book was Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli. Everything about this book is amazing. I loved that we had the chance to see where all the characters from Simon Vs the Homo sapiens Agenda got up to after the first book finished. I also found that this book helped give all the characters a bit more depth compared to the first book. Also the story was well thought out, and it didn’t feel that it was written just because it could, it felt genuine and real. I am a little sad that this is the last book about the Creekwood High gang, but I am also happy that its finished on such a high with this book.

  1. That’s sad about Autoboyography. I just got my copy from the library and will be reading it in the next few days. I’ve avoided reading detailed reviews so I wouldn’t get too hyped up!
