I enjoyed having a TBR last month so have decided to do another one for this month. I have not put as many books on this month because I didn’t manage to read all my books on my September TBR. I have decided to do a spooky themed TBR this month because its October and close to Halloween.
This month I will be reading-
Illuminae By Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman
‘The year is 2575 and two mega-corporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice covered speck. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them Ezra and Kady have to make their escape on the evacuating fleet. But their troubles are just beginning. A deadly plague has broken out on one of the space ships and it is mutating with terrifying results. Their ships protection is seriously flawed. No one will say what is going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth its clear only one person can help her. Ezra. And the only problem with that is they split up before all this trouble started and she isn’t supposed to be talking to him. A fantastically original, heart-stopping adventure where everything is definitely more dangerous than it seems’
I have nearly finished this and absolutely love it, the way in which the story is told is very new and refreshing.
The Graces by Laure Eve
‘Everyone said the Graces were witches.
They moved through the corridors like sleek fish, ripples in their wake. Stares followed their backs and their hair. They had friends, but they were just distractions. They were waiting for someone different. All I had to do was show them that person was me. Like everyone else in her town, River is obsessed with the Graces, attracted by their glamour and apparent ability to weave magic. But are they really what they seem? And are they more dangerous than they let on?’
I’ve heard some mixed reviews about this book, but it sounds interesting and a perfect time to read a book about witches.
The Power of Dark by Robin Jarvis
‘Something is brewing in the town of Whitby. To best friends Lil and Verne, it just seems like a particularly bad storm. But Cherry Cerise, the last of the Whitby witches, fears that ancient forces are at work, reviving the curse of a long lost magical artefact. The legend goes that the Nimius was created by magician Melchior Pyke, with the assistance of a young witch known as Scaur Annie. But they were both betrayed by Pyke’s villainous manservant, Mister Dark, causing a feud that has survived even beyond death. As Mister Dark, with his horrific winged familiar, arises to mastermind Whitby’s very own apocalypse and take the Nimius for his own evil purposes, can Lil and Verne join with Cherry to quell his plans and save their home?’
I picked this up over the summer when I went to Whitby and it looks like it will be a spooky read for a dark night.
A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay
‘The lives of the Barretts, a suburban New England family, are torn apart when fourteen-year-old Marjorie begins to display signs of acute schizophrenia. To her parents despair, the doctors are unable to halt Marjorie’s descent into madness. As their stable home devolves into a house of horrors, they reluctantly turn to a local Catholic priest for help, and soon find themselves the unwitting stars of The Possession, a hit reality television show. Fifteen years later, a bestselling writer interviews Marjorie’s younger sister, Merry. As she recalls the terrifying events that took place when she was just eight years old, long-buried secrets and painful memories begin to surface and a mind-bending tale of psychological horror is unleashed.’
I was sent this to review and after reading some of the reviews I think I will be sleeping with the lights on after reading this book, I cant wait to see if its as scary as people make out.
Contagion by Teri Terry
‘An epidemic is sweeping the country.
You are among the infected. There is no cure; and you cannot be permitted to infect others. You are now under quarantine.
The very few of the infected who survive are dangerous and will be taken into the custody of the army. Young runaway Callie survived the disease, but not the so-called treatment. Her brother Kai is still looking for her. And his new friend Shay may hold the keyto uncovering what truly happened.’
I was also sent this book to review and it sound brilliant.
Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
‘In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomach-ache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of beasts. But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose . . . it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.’
I don’t know if this has any spooky themes but I bought this last month and I am dying to read it.
Death Notes by Sarah Rayne
‘Phineas Fox has mixed feelings when he s asked to research the infamous 19th-century violinist Roman Volf for a TV documentary. Hanged for his part in the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881, Volf was a notorious criminal and womaniser, whose glittering talent was undermined by his scandalous private life. However, on uncovering evidence which suggests that Volf could not have been involved in the Tsar s murder, Phin s investigations lead him to the west coast of Ireland and a series of intriguing, interlocking mysteries reaching from 1881 to the present day.
Was Roman Volf executed for something he didnt do? And what is his connection with the reclusive Maxim Volf now living in County Galway? Phineas enquiries will unearth a number of dark secrets which lurk below the surface of the quiet Irish village of Kilcarne.’
I have read most of Sarah Rayne’s book and I love the spookiness and eeriness of her books so cant wait to see what this new series is like.
AND
If I manage to read all them books and have some time left I would like to try and finish Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children series and read Tales of the Peculiar. I also have Gemina, Replica and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Illustrated edition being delivered this month so I may start them also.
What books do you plan on reading in the month of October? Do you have some scary or spooky books to read?
