Book Reviews

Frostblood by Elly Blake

Frostblood is a refreshing and brilliant start to a series that everyone should read. I was excited to read this book as soon as I read the description for it and I was so happy to receive this in July’s Fairyloot box. I have a soft spot for books with element control in them and this definitely didn’t disappoint.

Frostblood is about a girl called Ruby who is a Fireblood, which means she can create and control fire. But she must hide this power because her kingdom is ruled by the Frost King, who is hell bent on destroying all Firebloods. When her mother is killed she is then thrown into prison. However a mysterious stranger breaks her out and Ruby is taken in by Frostbloods who want to kill the Frost King, and she is their only hope.

Elly Blake is onto a winner with the character of Ruby, she is extremely likeable right from the beginning. She is full of heart but also very feisty and knows how to handle other people. You can go from feeling sorry for her to cheering her along as she puts up a fight against the Frostbloods. The whole cast of characters in this book are hugely likeable and you connect with them all straight away.

The world building in this book is phenomenal, it was beautifully thought-out and very descriptive. As I read the book I could visualise the world and I could feel the coldness of the Frostblood land, it was perfect. I’ve read quite a few book series this year but Frostblood is the one that stands out and makes me excited about what is to come in the next book in the series.

One of my favourite parts of the book is the elemental control fighting. The way in which Elly Blake describes the fights and the battles had me on the edge on my seat, especially towards the end.  I couldn’t stop reading and I had it all playing in my head as if I was watching a movie. I even went back and re-read some scenes because they were that good I wanted to relive them again. Elly Blake has such a way with words that it sucks you in and immerses you into the world.

My little summary of the plot does not do the book justice, this book has a fresh new world, brilliant throughout characters and full to the brim of awesome action scenes. Elly Blake has created an amazing book that will be taking the world by storm. Its a shame that I have a year or more to wait for the sequel because Frostblood will be leaving you wanting more.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to dive into a new series that is full of intrigue and action that is set in an amazing world with brilliant characters. I can see myself re-reading this book over and over again without getting bored. Frostblood is one of my favourite reads of the year and one of my favourite books of all time.
